Kata Tjuta

/katə ˈdʒutə/ (say kahtuh 'joohtuh)

noun
a group of monoliths in the south-western NT, near Uluru; of spiritual and cultural significance to the Anangu people. Highest point, 1069 m.
Formerly, the Olgas. Also, Katatjuta.
Kata Tjuta comprises more than 30 domed masses of conglomerate rock. It is the visible and weathered tip of a huge slab of sedimentary rock formed from 550 million years ago, uplifted and tilted between 400 and 300 million years ago, and uncovered by erosion between 70 and 65 million years ago. It lies in territory traditionally inhabited by the Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara peoples. In 1872 explorer Ernest Giles named this landform the Olgas after Queen Olga of Württemberg. Today Kata Tjuta and nearby Uluru are part of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park; the area was returned to its traditional owners in 1985, then leased back for use as a national park.
